Mechanical Bearings vs. Air Bearings

The argument whether a CMM should be built with mechanical or air bearings is almost as old as CMMs themselves. Each bearing system has its place; which is better for a particular situation is the point in question. At Helmel, we have good reasons to use mechanical bearings and we think we know why most competitors choose otherwise. One is cost; air bearings do not need hardened ways. Second, it's a good sales gimmick! Doesn't it sound nice to have a machine that rides on a cushion of air?

To show what air bearings can do to you and your pocket book, we will let users speak. Following are articles as references from different segments of industry addressing the most common problem with air bearings!
