Ball-Bar Testing!

Checkmaster SMMUnfortunately most calibration services only test and correct for linear inaccuracies on your CMM. This leaves open the potential for errors as it is the relationship between the X, Y and Z-Axes that greatly affects accuracy when measuring in the 3-D world.

The Ball-Bar test will verify the relationship between the axes including squareness, level and when used in-line with a scale, linear errors between extremes in the measuring environment.

The real benefit for owning a Ball-Bar kit is that it can be administered by the CMM owner for in-shop validations and for testing after a probe crash to ensure the CMM remains accurate.

Renishaw RTP-20 Articulating Probe Head

RTP20Helmel's own CMM software, Geomet has been supporting the low-cost Renishaw RTP-20 articulating probe head since it's introduction in the USA. In fact, we were the first company to demonstrate it at the major trade shows.

The RTP-20 provides the means to reposition the touch probe to any of the 168 repeatable positions in 15° increments in the A and B-Axes. Each position required for the inspection would be qualified against the reference sphere one time and will not be required to have a re-qualification when repositioning the head

The key to providing this capability at a economical cost, and without any CMM retrofit cost, is the ability to tap the CMMs drive system to provide the articulation of the probe head. Through a simple user interface inside Geomet, the probe head is first tested against its rotation pole to provide position information to Geomet. This is done one-time and it is then ready for use.

To articulate the probe head to a position required for inspection, use the Geomet Stylus Manager to perform a qualification. The Stylus Manager will prompt you for the A/B angle values you want to articulate too. Geomet will then automatically drive to the pole and provide the necessary motion to position the probe head to the requested A/B angles. It is now ready for inspection.

TP20The RTP-20 utilizes the full rage of Renishaw TP20 modules including extensions. This not only provides a wider range of measurement capability, but includes safety when encountering collisions when moving in the X, Y and limited Z travel. The TP20 is magnetically attached to the probe head and simple separates when a collision occurs.

MCR20Increased reach and flexibility is achieved when you combine the MCR20 module rack. The MCR20 rack comes in 2, 4 and 6 bay configurations. The RTP-20 is fitted with a built-in extended collar that is designed to work specifically with the MCR20 module change rack.

Geomet, through the Stylus Manager, provides a simple user interface to setup and use the MCR20 module change rack. During the qualification process you are prompted for the bay assignment. There is no need to program moves for the change to take place, Geomet provides it all.
