CMM Probe Extensions

Probe Extensions

There are two main styles of extensions used on most probe systems. The two styles offer unique capabilities based on touch probe style, the access to features, and capabilities of your CMM.

The most common extension style is where the extension is used between the touch probe and stylus as shown above. This provides a low cost solution to most inspection needs. The concern that is raised by using this method is the increase in probe pre-travel and repeatability. The longer the extension, the greater the inaccuracies.

The second extension style is the use of extensions the mount between the probe head and touch probe body, as illustrated below in the kit table. This style moves the touch probe closer to your features and reduces potential probe error by reducing the length of the distance between the stylus ball and the touch trigger probe.
